There's darkness at the heart of the island, and now Peter Pan has returned to claim a new Wendy for his lost boys. Genre: Fantasy, Retelling, Fiction, Feminism My Rating: 4/5 My Review: "Wendy Darling, the girl who learnt to fly, who survived, who refused to be Afraid" The Classic Peter Pan and the Lost Boys retold. Only Peter Pan is not just the boy who refuses to grow up but much more dark and malicious. This story is the darker version of what happens in neverland after Wendy leaves and returns hom...

The twins, Anni and Theo, spent most of their summer vacation each year at Metsan Valo, with Mummo. They grew up listening to Folk stories about the land surrounding the house. Secrets of the Tides by Hannah Richell

Description:  Every family has its secrets. Some are small, like telling a white lie or snooping through a private drawer. Others are more serious, like infidelity and betrayal. And some secrets are so terrible they must be hidden away in a deep, dark place, for if they ever came to light, they would surely tear a family apart . . . The Tides are a family full of secrets. Returning to Clifftops, the rambling family house high up on the Dorset coastline, youngest daughter Dora hopes for a fresh start, for herself and the new life she carries. But can long-held secrets ever really be forgiven? And even if you can forgive, can you ever really learn to love again? Secrets of the Tides is a family drama with a dark thread of suspense at its heart. Genre: Thriller, Mystery,   Fiction, Family, Contemporary My rating: 4/5 Review: Secrets of the Tides follows the story of the Tides or to be explicit 'secrets' of the Tides and to be more precise 'guilt' of the Tides. The story ...

The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory

Description:  Jacquetta, daughter of the Count of Luxembourg and kinswoman to half the royalty of Europe, was married to the great Englishman John, Duke of Bedford, uncle to Henry VI. Widowed at the age of 19, she took the extraordinary risk of marrying a gentleman of her household for love, and then carved out a new life for herself. Genre: Historical Fiction, Romance, Fiction, European Literature My Rating: 4/5 Jacquetta is the descendant of water Goddess Melusina and has a foreseeing future (well only sometimes), the dower Dutchess, The Lady of Rivers, and the White Queen Elizabeth's real-life mother. The author's opening note showed a young girl Joan chained and held as a prisoner who claimed to be following the orders by God. Her powers were termed unfeminine and since she was not a man and was powerful she was declared a witch and burned. I wish there was more about Joan in the book, nevertheless, her part was to make clear that women were either weak or witch to...

The File on Thomas Marks by Bentley Turner

Genre : Murder mystery, Thriller, Detective Rating : 4/5 Book review:  How does it feel to be accused of doing something and being completely oblivious to it? Well, Thomas Marks was facing something similar to this. This brilliant thriller story is about the murder of 2 women, both accompanied by Thomas Marks at the time of their murder. But Is he the culprit? or is this psycho murderer trying to trap Thomas? or is Thomas Marks just in the wrong place at the wrong time? The killer marks the bodies with some satanic name which gave leads to the involvement of some cult and this twist was my favorite part. 2 detectives are solving this mystery and I am so impressed by the portrait of them as detectives and as a team. It's all so interlinked and involves quite a few suspects, all probable convicts. But when the culprit is actually caught and confesses everything it all makes sense. To all the mystery solvers, there is no way you can find out the culprit which is why I was ...

The Thirteenth Day by Aditya Iyengar

Description: It is the tenth night of the great war between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Bhishma, the venerable patriarch of the families, lies fatally wounded on the plains of Kurukshetra. On his deathbed, he offers Radheya, his nemesis, a chance to rule the Kuru kingdom by capturing Yudhishthira. Genre: Historical Fiction, Mythology, Indian Literature. Rating: 4/5 Book Review: The book describes the three days and nights of the Kurukshetra war from the point of view of Bhishma Pitamah, Yudhishthir eldest of Pandavas, Abhimanyu son of Arjun and Radheya, or Karana son of Kunti. The book is not mystically written. It was like reading just another war story. Lord Krishna was denoted as Krishna, Arjun's charioteer, which would hurt my Hindu sentiments otherwise but this book was purely Historical and not mythical. Focused on how Abhimanyu was defeated, how brilliant yet dangerously Radheya planned the Chakravyuha on the thirteenth day, and how Yudhisthira accepted his lack of war exp...

The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson

Description:  A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut. Genre: Fiction Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal Witches  Rating: 5/5 Book review: The Story of Emmanuel kept me hooked right from the first chapter and I completed it in less than a week. The book spooks about the evil in the woods, which was home to four witches. The city outside woods was looked after or I’d say ruled by The Prophet, to whom people worshiped. The father claimed that his actions were directed by the Father in Heaven's and people believed and obeyed everything as the Prophet demanded. Everyone feared the woods, everyone but Emmanuel.  So who was this Emmanuel?? Well if I have to define her character I'd say she was the hero and the villain (or maybe not) but surely valiant, self-aware, altruistic, and a witch. The girl who lost her parents before she could know them, living with her mother's parents. She was draw...
